International Spy Museum

With the recent release of Breach, Robert Hanssen is once again in the public eye and the topic of much discussion. The Hanssen case has been called the the worst intelligence disaster in US history. However, while a great deal is known concerning Hanssen spying activities over the twenty two years that he gave classified documents to the USSR and later Russia, the reason behind his betrayal is still shrouded in a great deal of mystery and controversy. Helping to give answers to the daunting task of ‘why,’ The International Spy museum in DC on November 28, 2007 will open a new exibit on Hanssen. This new exibit is from the unique perspective of his friend and longtime collegue David G. Major, who for 14 years worked with Hanssen at FBI headquarters in Washington DC. A privately owned museum, The International Spy Museum is dedicated to the field of espionage. Located in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and about one block west of the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station, the museum covers espionioge techniques from the Greek and Roman empires right up to the cold war and today.

Chinese for Travelers

With the coming of the Beijing Olympics, China is becoming more accessible to foreign travelers. English signs are everywhere and it seems that everyone seems to speak some English. But if you want a true glimpse of China, you will have to venture away from the big cities and into the rural villages, where people will still be amazed by your colored eyes and hair and your western features. To survive in these places, you will have to learn some basic Chinese. Here are some simple phrases to help you get by.

Iowa never comes up short when it comes to recreation, history, and family fun. The state is filled with campgrounds, nature trails, biking paths, golf courses, and the kind of towns that define America’s heartland. It’s a state of Amish buggies, white-tailed deer, geese, wildlife refuges, river valleys, and country inns. As for things to do and see, the Amana Colonies, one of Iowa’s major visitor attractions, comprises seven authentic German Villages formed over 150 years ago. The crafts and culture here remain as much testaments of the past as they do learning experiences of the present. The Herbert Hoover Birthplace is also a great historic site, fully restored, including Hoover’s home, personal library, and working ironsmith shop. Iowa’s border along the Great Lakes offers a multitude of opportunities for fishing, boating, waterskiing, jet skiing, and sunbathing. Also in the Northwest region are Sioux City landmarks and the trails of Lewis and Clark. Further south are the picturesque prairie lands and rolling Loess Hills. Iowa is also famous for its rodeos and game hunting. For a bird’s eye view of the land, take a trip in a hot air balloon over the tallgrass of the prairie and witness a place where the buffalo truly roam free. Or take your chances on a riverboat casino while traveling down the mighty Mississippi. Iowa is also home to “the world’s crookedest street”!
